In October of 1988, the Michigan Department of Civil Rights issued a report that made suggestions that all schools using Native American names and mascots change them. The report stated that the use of Native American names and mascots for athletic teams promoted racial stereotypes. James J. Balten, Sr. born September 13, 1915 and graduated from Akron New York High School. During his time at the Normal College he was a member of the Phi Delta Pi fraternity and the Physical Education Club, held the position of lineman on the football team where he lettered in the fall of 1936, '37 and '38 and threw shotput for the Track and Field team (1938, '39).
